Citizen Spotlight: April Lester
A Heart for Helping Others
For one local Veteran, something as simple as sitting outside his home had become difficult. Without a safe and accessible way to get outdoors, enjoying the fresh air from his own porch was no longer easy.
Then April Lester and a group of volunteers stepped in.
Together, they helped build a porch and wheelchair ramp that gave the Veteran a safer way to get outside and enjoy his home. They also spent time cleaning up his yard and pulling weeds. But for April, the most meaningful part was not completing the work. It was seeing him sitting outside on his new porch and knowing that their efforts had made his life a little better.
That moment reflects the kind of person April has been throughout her life.
For more than 30 years, April has quietly helped people throughout the Oakdale community. She has supported seniors, assisted neighbors in need, and volunteered her time to serve local Veterans and First Responders. She does not help others for recognition or praise. She does it because caring for people is simply part of who she is.
That spirit of service began at home.
When asked what first inspired her to volunteer, April immediately spoke about the example set by her mother.
“My mother helped everyone. It was just something you did.”
It was a simple lesson, but one that stayed with April. As the years passed, helping others became more than something she had been taught. It became a way of life.
April has been part of Pacific Project Heroes since its early days, generously giving her time and energy to support our mission. Veterans and First Responders hold a special place in her heart, and she considers it a privilege to give back to those who have sacrificed so much in service to their communities and country.
We consider it a privilege to have April standing beside us.
Organizations like Pacific Project Heroes are built on the dedication of people who are willing to show up, lend a hand, and care deeply about the lives of others. April has done that time and time again. Her service has helped us continue reaching the heroes and families who need to know that their community remembers them, appreciates them, and stands behind them.
Volunteering has also changed the way April sees people. She understands that sometimes a helping hand can mean far more than we realize. For her, the greatest reward is not being thanked. It is seeing the happiness on someone’s face and knowing that she helped make that moment possible.
“It’s the feeling that you’ve done something good, just to see them happy,” April shared.
That is what makes April’s story so special. Her impact cannot be measured by one project or one act of kindness. It can be found in more than three decades of showing up for others, often quietly and without expecting anything in return.
April is hardworking, devoted, and deeply caring. She represents the very best of Oakdale and reminds us that making a difference does not always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it begins by noticing a need, stepping forward, and doing what you can to help.
Pacific Project Heroes is incredibly thankful for April, not only for the years she has given to our organization, but also for the compassion she continues to share throughout our community. Her heart for Veterans, First Responders, seniors, and neighbors in need has touched more lives than she may ever fully know.
